Anyone using the JAWS 13 beta? The OCR is a cool feature, but I am not sure there is anything else noteworthy in terms of new features. So far, in my early experiences, I find the Quick Settings feature a step backward; the JAWS Options dialogue suited me fine. The Word interface has been rewritten, FS says, but in my limited experience I have not noticed much change. I have found erratic behaviour on Web forms with Internet Explorer. I am not trying to bash FS; JAWS is something I use every day and am very happy with. I don't think there's enough in 13, though, to justify paying for an upgrade. Thoughts?
i personally think they should make the OCR as an add on for jaws in general as it would be extremely useful. i don't hae the money to upgrade jaws any longer, and don't even know if i would at this point
I'm using it and I use Office 2010, so it has some changes that are reasonable. I think it works bbetter with IE 9 and I can use some clients that 12 doesn't support, like Napster completely now. I'll do the upgrade for the next 2 years I think. Also Windows 8 is around the corner and they promise support for it if possible, so if you're buying a new computer say in the next few months 8 will be an option you might want.
I've noticed speed improvements, too. OCR's neat, but needs polish.
yes OCR is kool i bought my upgrades so i have 13 and 14. I have noticed that it is more responsive then 12. I think they are making improvements, but jfw has needed them for so long that it doesn't seam like they are.
I hope jaws does support windows 8, I would like to know my SMS money isn't wasted. If I didn't have the SMS though, I doubt I would upgrade as I think they need to fix the speed of jaws 12 first. It is annoying to have a computer that from time to time stops talking and I have to wait about thirty seconds before it will start again or unload and relaunch jaws. Depending on how good the ocr is and whether you can use it in webpages to read those annoying captias, then it might be worth it.
You can't use it to solve CAPTCHAs, I believe. If you could just use OCR tchnology, then they would be useless, as the whole point is to make sure computerized software can't solve them.
Hopefully it will continue to work with XP, as I dont plann on upgrading at any point until I have too. I guess that JAWS will continue to support XP until microsoft stops supporting it in what was it. 2014, april to be exact? or was it 2015.
@wildebrew, that is kindof my point. If I can't capture a captia and interpret it, then unless Jaws functionality improves, I am not sure this OCR option is worth the money or if a separate ocr option isn't still the best.
Well considering even sited people have trouble with those things, how would you expect jaws to be able to read it?
I never had a speed issue with 12. Mine runs smoothly. The only thing I couldn't do is access Napster client completely and that only changed after 2 upgrades of 12. It happened with 11. Okay now it works again, so hopefully they'll leave it alone this year?
Now if you read the whats new or listen to that Pod cast deal he does say that they will support 8, but not yet until it is released. This happened with 7 as well.
Yes XP will most likely be supported until Microsoft stops doing so, but if you leave say 13 on your computer you'll be fine on that box you has XP installed.
7's some good stuff though, give it a try. Smile.
Ah. I'm not agenst 7, but my thought is that XP will still be around for a while.
I posted that one before i listened to the podcast saying how it would support XP.
My guess is by 2014, Windows 8 will be out.
Also, I have XP on both boxes I got, which is the only two puters I got (Laptop and desktop).
as it looks right now win 8 will be out next year at some time if it stays on schedual
Does Jaws 13 support Google Crome?
I happened to mention it to the tech support specialist this morning, and yes to a point. There somethings that it doesn't yet support since google chrome itself has its own problems in part because of how fast it is evolving. Had what I thought was a faulty script, turned out that a script wasn't copied correctly and a system repair was necessary, but it allowed me to ask that very question you posed.
